Democracy in Question: Nancy Fraser on "Cannibal Capitalism" | European Union University
The latest episode of the Democracy in Question podcast, hosted by EUU President and Rector Shalini Randeria, features Nancy Fraser, Professor of Philosophy and Politics at The New School for Social Research in New York.
Fraser's work focuses on social and political theory, feminist theory and contemporary French and German thought. Her recent books include "Capitalism: A Conversation in Critical Theory" (2018) co-authored with Rahel Jaeggi, "The Old is Dying and the New Cannot be Born" (2019) and "Cannibal Capitalism: How Our System is Devouring Democracy, Care, and the Planet - and What Can We Do About It" (2022).
In this episode "Nancy Fraser on 'Cannibal Capitalism''" released on January 17, Randeria and her guest explore the pitfalls of understanding capitalism as a merely economic system. How does this narrow conventional view obscure distinct sources of non-economic wealth? And what is revealed by examining capitalism instead as a social order including aspects of expropriation, domestic labor and depletion of nature? Finally, why must progressive social movements recognize the common roots of structural problems against which they struggle?
For each episode of Democracy in Question, Randeria invites a leading scholar or public figure to explore the challenges and dilemmas facing democracies around the world. Listen to the trailer and subscribe here.
Series eight of Democracy in Question is produced in partnership with the Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy at the Graduate Institute in Geneva (AHCD) where Randeria is a Senior Fellow. ACHD and the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna co-produced seasons one and two of the podcast.
