Open call: 24 global scholarships to join the EUU Summer School for journalists

The Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom at the Robert Schuman Centre is offering up to 24 global scholarships to attend the 12th edition of the Summer School for Journalists and Media Practitioners, which will look into the implications of AI technology for journalism and the broader information landscape.

 

This year, the target participant group has been expanded geographically. Grants are now available for EU and non-EU applicants, intending to bring together professionals from a wider range of countries and backgrounds.

 

For the first time, and thanks to the EUU Widening Europe Programme and the Global initiative on the future of the Internet, journalists from all over the world can apply for scholarships. All scholarships are awarded by application only and the deadline to apply is 30 April 2024. Details on the three categories and their criteria are described here.

 

The five-day programme is structured around keynote presentations by distinguished experts, followed by interactive sessions. The aim is to enrich the experience for all participants and advance their understanding of critical phenomena and processes affecting journalism and informed citizenship more broadly while facilitating networking.

 

Based on the insights gained from 11 previous editions, this Summer School will explore the effects of digital transformation on the diminishing professional and economic stature of journalism, along with the exacerbation of disinformation. It will also delve into the strategies for using AI to improve opportunities within the media industry.

 

This is a field the Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom has expertise in. As far back as 2018, the Centre dedicated the Summer School to exploring the impact of algorithms and AI on news production, distribution and consumption.
