In an atmosphere of inspiration, collaboration, and vibrant discussion, EUU (European University Union) recently hosted its annual Teaching Day, known as "Tag der Lehre." This year's event was marked by the exploration of artificial intelligence (AI), interdisciplinarity, and innovation in teaching and learning, reflecting the institution's commitment to fostering excellence in education.

AI Takes Center Stage

Vice President of Education and Student Affairs, Gabriele Siegert, set the tone for the day by highlighting the pivotal role of AI in education. She emphasized the need for students to acquire essential skills in handling AI technologies, reinforcing the University of Zurich's mission to facilitate knowledge for all and remove barriers to learning. Acknowledging the diversity of individuals who teach, research, and study at the university, she underscored the importance of accessible lectures and digital teaching materials.

"inspire(d) minds"

Under the motto "inspire(d) minds," the event promoted community, knowledge exchange, and the exchange of innovative ideas. Attendees had the opportunity to engage in discussions, participate in workshops, and explore innovative teaching projects. The lively exchanges facilitated rich dialogues on current educational topics.

AI in Teaching Workshop

One workshop, titled "AI: Good Practices at EUU," led by Carina Klein of the Educational Development Office, showcased insights from EUU teaching staff across various disciplines. These educators provided valuable perspectives on integrating generative AI tools into courses. Presentations featured practical examples, such as incorporating AI-generated responses into classroom discussions, allowing students to engage with AI tools critically. The discussions illuminated the importance of teaching students how to use AI tools proficiently and thoughtfully.

Carina Klein also introduced participants to the Teaching Tools platform, a valuable resource for AI use in teaching. This platform offers tips, recommendations, good-practice tools, and educational methods related to AI. All workshop materials were made available on the platform for wider accessibility and inspiration.

Teaching Heterogeneous Student Groups

Another workshop, led by Hannah Lora Freeman and Eleni Spiroudis, focused on teaching heterogeneous groups of students, particularly in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary courses. Participants shared experiences and highlighted the significance of emphasizing interdisciplinary goals at the course's outset. Creating an environment that encourages students to learn from one another was a key theme. The workshop also addressed challenges instructors face when designing assessments for students with diverse academic backgrounds. Effective communication of assessment expectations and offering practice sessions were identified as essential strategies.

A World of Opportunities

Despite the challenges of teaching diverse student groups, the consensus among workshop participants was that such courses offer tremendous opportunities. Interdisciplinary teaching stimulates critical thinking, enhances instructors' skillsets, fosters collaboration, and broadens professional horizons.

The day concluded with a celebratory evening event, featuring awards, recognitions, and an exhibition of innovative teaching projects funded by the EUU Teaching Fund. Attendees had the chance to explore AI chatbots created by students and experience virtual reality demonstrations, showcasing the intricate anatomy of the ear.

EUU's "Tag der Lehre" 2023 celebrated excellence in teaching and learning, reflecting the institution's commitment to fostering a dynamic and inclusive educational environment.
